I have this one MS patch (KB886903) that won't install or go away so I can
re-download the patch in case the file is bad.

At shutdown, the message is that you have a file that needs to be installed
and if you choose to perform the install, it is never installed and the PC
hangs. I have been selecting to "shutdown without installing" option to save
me from a hard shutdown.

I found the file in the /windows/prefetch/ and moved to a different place
and it still want to install the file. I went in to custom install and
deselected the file and told it not to remind me about the patch. Problem
appears to be solved at shutdown, but when I do a manual update from MS, it
reminds me that I have this patch hidden and if I want to install it. Errr!

Any one have any idea how to remove the patch for good so I can download
another copy to try again fresh?

Try downloading and installing .NET v2.0 instead of the update for v1.1
You'd be updating .NET and it might end the patch for v1.1

I did what you suggested and the install in the .net 2.0 patch installed
fine. But I'm still asked to 'unhide' and install the older patch. Can I just
delete the older patch file? Not sure if windows will like it or if the
details of the patch is located else where. At the Ms site where one gets the
patches I clicked on the patch history and there are about a dozen same error
messages related to the patch. The error code is 0x643 - Installation failure.

Any ideas?

Thanks
