Failed USB2.0 Hub Controller Installation

Guest

TI am trying to install a USB Hub Controller into a Windows 2000 Professional
PC. Windows correctly detects the new USB Hub Controller, and tries to
install the Generic USB Hub device driver.

However, the Add Hardware Wizard fails with this message "The installation
failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance."

Any suggestions?

Does this happen to be a unit that requires Windows 2000 drivers from
the manufacturer?

According to Belkin technical support web site,

"Description: Drivers for USB Hubs

Instructions:
The drivers are included within the operating system for both Mac and
PC.

Then then next question, Is the USB on the computer set up and working
properly? Any clues in Device Manager as to what went wrong?

USB is working properly, it has 2 USB ports and I previously have had
the printer and SD card reader connected. The device manager reports
only that the USB Hub is not installed (since driver not installed).

Do you have SP4 installed? I'm not 100% certain but didn't USB 2.0 support
arrive in SP4?

No. One of my systems is still on SP3 and MS's USB2.0
drivers are installed and working as they should.

The USB Hub (from Belkin) is backwards compatible with USB 1.1 as well.
I checked the manual from Belkin.

That may mean that you're devices used can be USB 1.1 while the drivers need
to be the enhanced (USB 2.0) drivers? Just grasping for straws for you...

Updated USB 2.0 Drivers Are Available in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819332

FWIW Here's another site that suggests SP4 for 2k and USB 2.0:

USB Drivers and Patches:
http://www.usbman.com/Drivers and Patches.htm

Other than that did you check at the manufacturer's site or did it come with
an installation disk?

I've had working USB 2.0 devices on my Win2k Machine for a long time
before and after install SP4. All of a sudden, I get the same message
and NONE of my USB devices work anymore. I don't know what changed
other than a little software installs. My camera no longer can
connect, my jump drive cannot connect, none of my MP3 players can
connect.

HELP!!! Please!

well... what was the "same message" ?
and it the usuall stuff

Sudden stoppage on such a large scale is very likely a driver deletion,
corruption, HW fault or interference of some sort.

Do you have USB keyboard or mouse ? is working ?

Check Start->Settings-> Control panel->System-> Hardware->Device Manager->
USB Controler
check properties and status of USB devices

Check Start->Settings-> Control panel->Admin Tools->Computer
Management->System Info->Components->Problem Devices
see if you are listed

if you get this far then things i would suspect / try

1. IF your connected to HUB then HUB failure , power disconnected etc.
2. try connecting a previously working device directly to a USB port ?
3. If you made it here and If you are using front panel USB ports maybe a
cable loose ?? try rear ports ?
4. BIOS USB enable/disable setting ?

Anybody know what "...function driver was not specified for this
device instance" means? I've not found it on any of Microsoft's web
sites.

One day I was able to access my USB jump drive and the next time that
I plugged it in I was not able to access the drive. My firewire
devices are still working fine. It's just the USB.

Nothing else.
Check Start->Settings-> Control panel->System-> Hardware->Device Manager->
USB Controler
check properties and status of USB devices
Did that, it says that the driver is not installed. Updating or
installing the driver yields the "informative" error message quoted
above.
Check Start->Settings-> Control panel->Admin Tools->Computer
Management->System Info->Components->Problem Devices
see if you are listed

Did all the above. Took my hub and devices to work and they work fine
there. Plus I did an OS repair using the install CD to no avail.
I'd prefer not to do a complete install and I am trying to avoid
installing XP. If there are no other options, I'll do the install
