I've recently checked my installation history for Windows
Updates and realised that a significant amount over the
past 18 months have "Failed". How do I correct this ? I
was aware that maybe 1 or 2 had not installed perfectly
due to the pc freezing at the time but not the rest that
I found. Running the update scan again only tells you of
new updates available, not what you need because it
hasn't installed. Some of the Driver updates can be
updated manually from various websites, I know, but
Microsoft Security Updates etc. ?

Actually, that is not supposed to be how it is. Although
WU does sometimes have issues with accurately determining,
it is supposed to discover what is not installed, not what has
not been attempted.

For safety you could download, install and run MBSA, the
MS Baseline Security Analyzer.

Thanks Roger - downloaded the MBSA and it identified 2
windows security updates that could not be confirmed and
1 MSXML (?) security update that was out of date. This
was a lot less than I had feared, however the suggested
action was to go back to the Windows update page and
download the missing updates. This just takes me back to
square one though and although i tried it again, I get
the same result - all updates (critical or otherwise) are
supposedly up to date and therefore not available for
download...huh ?

Until recently you could usually get to a download link by
taking the <KB number> and forming the url
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=<KB number>
and the KB often would provide download links.
If that fails go to microsoft.con/security and look for the
list of security bulletin (assuming you have the ms03-0xy
number) and it (the full version) will either provide a link
for downloads, or refer you to the KB.
There are maybe one or two that are only obtainable from
WU website. We have tried hard to get MS to make sure
they all are available outside of WU.
If all else fails, you can search at microsoft.com/downloads
or you can visit WU and select to use custom options, and
this makes the link for Windows Catalog become visible,
and then you may use this to search and download by OS and
KB number.
