Curt's fix worked for me as well. I hadn't found that reference either -

Yesterday I was about to pull the plug on Vista, buy my backup wouldn't work

Re-read my initial post and you'll see that this is:

1- a widespread problem
2- a problem not related to specific hardware or software, or manufacturer
3- an issue researched relatively well by the initiator of the complaint

The make and model would not have helped. The amount of RAM would not have
helped, either. I came here for help on a known issue, and someone
obviously
searched somewhere I did not and found the perfect solution-many thanks to
Curt for that.

I'd already gone way past the first-line support, and eliminated factors
that would have been impacted by such things.

Anyhow. Thanks anyways.

had that issue

The things I posted that you add when posting is a good idea for anyone. I
helped someone else on another forum with a problem that was specific to a
firmware issue on the DVD writer in her Toshiba Laptop. Therefore as I
stated, the more info you can provide the easier and quicker a answer can be
found to problems. That may not have been case in you issue, but in general
it is a good idea.
