Fail to install any Microsoft updates on a Windows 2000 server

I ran Windows Update on a Windows 2000 server (a domain member server, it is
NOT a domain controller) to retrive hotfixes from Microsoft web site, I was
then displayed with a list of hotfixes. As usual, I clicked install to
install the listed hotfixes (all hotfixes in the list).

It started to install the 1st hotfix and the installation stopped with the
message "updates were unable to be successfully installed" for all other
hotfixes. Then I rebooted the server and tried several times to install the
hotfixes again and again but in vain.

Some errors were logged in the System and Application log of the server.

I have also downloaded the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4, and
executed the .exe manually, but the installation still failed.

The error returned was "Access denied". It is very strange as I have
already logged on the server as local ADMINISTRATOR.

Any idea?
