Fail to hibernate..more evidence

I'm opening a new thread on this subject, after a week or
so hiatus, to simplify the illustration of the problem.

I shut down all programs and watch the system go to Screen Saver
mode. Then I go away, and when I return hours later, instead
of going through the Power Options sequence as expected, I find
the screen on, in regular Desktop mode.

So I go to the Event Viewer, and under System I find a zillion
events, the last page of which are these:

Please note the references to CRT and Tcpip, and the numbers referring
to the nature of the Error. Note ati2mtag, which I believe refers to
the Power Options. It seems that, every 45 minutes or so, the CRT
error occurs, and 3 seconds later There is a Service Control Manager
"Information" entry. Any clue as to what I can change in Power Options
to try to track down these events? My timing sequence now is
20 minutes>>30 minutes>>45 minutes>>2 hours.

There is a similar bunch of error messages under Security as well.

Uninstall the ATI device drivers and software, reboot and download/install
the latest version of the drivers only for your particular video card
fromthe ATI web page. *Driver Only*. No Catalyst software.

And then I found they had moved it under 'legacy', and I downloaded
what might be the right display driver. So my next question is, of the
several ATI files in Add/Remove, which shall I remove, and in
particular, should I remove ATI Catalyst Control Center, ATI Catalyst
Control Panel, and ATI Display Driver? I think I have the correct file
downloaded, ready to install.

Whenever I am working on performance issues and see Catalyst Control
Center I ask... do you ever use this?

When the answer is... what is it?

I remove it.

If you don't know what it is or use it (besides it being an icon), at
least disable it.

Look in Task Manager at the resources it consumes, disable it in
msconfig, reboot and check your resources again.

Please let me augment my last request (above) with this question:
I have an ATI Catalyst Control Center which I have never used.
I don't even know what it's there for, or what I can do with it.
Likewise an ATI Control Panel.
I also have ATI Display Driver(s).

In uninstalling, do I uninstall all three?
And then, in installing the new download, do I install all
three, or just the Display Driver?

I'm trying to avoid falling off a cliff here.......

Thanks (in advance) for more specific advice.

Uninstall Anything that Says "ATI" in it.
Install just the ATI display driver.

Sorry, it will not let me install just the driver. It gives 2 options,
normal install or custom. Custom has 3 blocks to check, and what they
offer does not include Display Driver at all.

BTW, I have been doing all this testing on my "clone" backup system,
for fear of damaging my main system beyond repair. Searching for
"ati2" on that system gives a multitude of .exe files, including
atim2tag.exe ati2dvag.exe ati2evxx.exe and they are
stored on my system in a dozen places.

Perhaps the following is trying to tell us something:
In bootup up, the cleanest boot I've seen still leaves two
events as errors among the various 'events':

ati2mtag-CRT 45062
-------------------------
service control manager 7026
-------------------------
CRT Invalid display type

(This CRT has been in use, on this system, for 3 years,
so I guess the software has been updated to where the
CRT has lost some compatibilit).

Continuing on in the same vein, I refer to Err Msg #615, which
expanded to this (a few letters and words missing):

Event Source: Security
Event Category: Policy Change
Event ID: 615
Date: 3/1/2010
Time: 10:37:10 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
Computer: COMPAQ-2006
Description:
IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of
network interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security
hazard to the machine since some of the network interfaces may not get
the protection as desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec
monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I tried that link. It led me to another reference to Err Msg 615 ...
with no useful information in it. What is an IPSec monitor snap-in?
And how do I find it and run it??

Continuing on, after computer hiccup, I find, in Task Manager,
*two* instances of "ati2evxx.exe"
running, of different sizes, with SYSTEM as the user. This
doesn't sound normal to me. Especially since AIDA reports that
the applicable driver is at12mtag.exe ......
Is it normal? Why is it loaded twice?

With further reference to the "Fail to hibernate..." and ATI
problem, I offer the following Event, with Error Type 45062,
which expands into "CRT Invalid display type".
I'm going to start a new thread on that subject, although
my questions above may still be valid questions.
