fail error message when windows loads

I've set up a new "limited "user account" for my girls. When they log in a
box pops up and says "fail". I assume this is because something is not
loading? When I switch them to "admin" the error message goes away.

Question - how do i track down what is causing the error message? I can't
check msconfig under the girls account when the account is set up as "limited"

Thanks.

Temporarily change the girls' account to Computer Administrator. Run
msconfig and note everything that is starting with Windows. Do
clean-boot troubleshooting to find out which program/process needs
administrative privileges. The usual culprits are antivirus programs
and older programs. The latter probably don't need to be starting with
Windows anyway.

Once you've determined which program is the troublemaker, you can either
stop it from starting with Windows (naturally you won't want to do this
for your av!) and/or contact the program mftr.'s tech support to see
how to assign permissions to the folders/registry entries to which it
needs access.

After you're all done fixing the problem, you can make the girls'
account Limited again.

Sorry to sound dense - but where do I find "clean-boot" troubleshooting?

By the way this is a new computer - no old programs - running pccillin
atvirus.

thank you for taking the time to help me out with this problem.

If this is a new OEM computer (HP, Dell, etc.) I'd really give a hard
look at what is running at startup. The OEM's load their computers with
all sorts of OEM-garbage. HP loves monitoring programs for their
computers and their printers for instance. I always optimize new OEM
computers for clients and the results in startup/running speed are
quite noticeable.

Definitely check on PC-Cillin's tech support site to see if their
program has a known issue running under Limited Users' accounts. For
instance, I use F-Prot on all my Windows boxen and you need to manually
configure permissions on folders and registry entries in order for the
Updater to work in Limited Accounts.
