F_USB1/F_USB2 (USB Headers) on a Gigabyte MB

Hi All,

I bought a new Gigabyte motherboard model GA-MA78LM-S2H. It has 6 built in
USB 2.0 ports on the board with an additional 6 that can be added with the
use of 2 USB headers. I've also bought an ATX case that has 4 USB ports on
it that I would like to be able to use by plugging them into the
motherboard. The manual simply states:

"12) F_USB1/F_USB2 (USB Headers)
The headers conform to USB 2.0/1.1 specification. Each USB header can
provide two USB ports via an optional USB bracket. For purchasing the
optional USB bracket, please contact the local dealer."

The 2 headers have a 9 pin configuration each supporting 2 USB ports.

My question is what piece of hardware would I need to utilize these extra
ports from the connections on the motherboard to my ATX case?

Thanks for any info you can provide!

You didn't state what the computer case make and model was.

Internal connectors inside the computer case, could consist of 2x5
header connectors (on the end of a shielded cable), or regular
four pin USB connectors. You need the right cabling, to go from
the motherboard 2x5, to a regular USB connector or a matching 2x5 header
used inside the computer case.

The computer case itself, should come with the right cabling.
Everyone knows, motherboards have multiple 2x5 headers on them,
so the computer case should come with the needed adapter cables
with 2x5 on the ends.

If it did not, or you lost the cables, you'd go to Frontx.

http://www.frontx.com/store/order_a.html

A motherboard 2x5 header, consists of two independent USB interfaces.
The cables on FrontX, use a 1x5 design. You can plug two 1x5 cables,
into a 2x5 header, and that way, can get two independent USB channels
from it. For example, using a single 1x5 cable, you could connect
to a tray mount card reader which has an ordinary USB connector on it.

Anyway, inspect the inventory provided with the computer case carefully.
I would expect all cables to be included. If they're stupid enough to
save $1 by not putting that cable in the computer case cardboard box,
it will cost you a small fortune to have some shipped from FrontX.
I'd rather buy another brand of computer case, if they don't
include the cables. And the computer case assembly manual
may be available for download. Some of those give wiring diagrams
for the included cables.

What is connected to the case USBs?

The "optional USB Bracket" stated by Gigabyte is an add-on part that
installs into one of the empty PCI device slots in the back of the
computer. You might want one of those if your case did not have USB ports.

Yours does, so you plug the case's USB ports into the motherboard's
headers as if they were the "optional USB Bracket" and you are done.

Generally the case itself comes with the requisite cables to ports
built into the front of the case.
