What does it mean to extract the contents of the zip to a folder? I am
looking at storyboarding a powerpoint with several complex animations.

In this context, a ZIP is a type of file that contains compressed versions of
one or more other files. Kind of a portable filing cabinet.

Extracting the contents to a folder just means pulling the files out of the zip
file and storing them in a folder on your PC.

If you have Windows XP, just doubleclick the ZIP file; it'll open up as though
it were a normal folder. Select the files in it, drag them to any convenient
other folder, then close the ZIP.

I'm not sure how this connects to the zip question. Care to explain further?
Thanks.
