explorer crashes during extraction of complex zip files.
reproduction steps:
1. download this zip file
http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/8232/30034/Joomla_1.5.6-Stable-Full_Package.zip
2. double click on it in explorer
3. extract all files (using the built-in zip support)

the extraction will fail and explorer will crash. Try yourself.

How would one know what's in a downloaded file link that you provided? I
certainly wouldn't do it.

You can use the trial version of Winrar or Winzip if you have to unzip that
file.

Sorry Bill the Bugfinder... can't duplicate here. The "bug" is in
your computer, not mine.

I think I am going to do another Level3, because I am so mad. :)

No offense intended, but I don't think you are actually helping the problem
Paul. Oh, and it is an issue with windows vista extracting zip files. I
have seen it happen personally on 9 different vista systems, with 9 different
hardware platforms, and over 30 different zip files. Using something like 7
zip usually works around the problem, but that doesn't fix it on the MS side.

Hmm... how odd: you have the exact same posting host IP number as Bill
the Bugfinder has! WHAT a coincidence!

I did exactly as Bill the Bugfinder instructed... and could NOT
duplicate his problem. So it is NOT a "bug".

So, bug off Bill.

BTW... in case there is any doubt that I downloaded and extracted the
file, it had like 4600 files/folders zipped into it and took my system
over 3 minutes to extract everything.

Do you have AVG anti-virus on this system?

I am onsite for today and tomorrow doing server install and configurations.
I will test it fully by first turning off AVG scanning on the zip and
extracting, then uninstalling AVG and extracting. If everything works out
that it is an AVG problem then I will report it to AVG, as we are partners
with them as well as with microsoft. In the end, it really doesn't matter to
me which software vendor's problem it is, as long as it gets fixed. I work
in IT, and I grow very weary of everyone taking more time to point the finger
and place blame than working together to formulate a solution. No wonder the
public becomes very exasperated with technicians that really don't care about
solving problems, just with proving their company is not to blame. THANK YOU
ZACH, for taking the time to help completely identify the problem rather than
being like paul and just saying "it's not an MS problem" and never actually
offering any valuable information other than "it works on my machine - so
there!". Maybe someday paul will grow up a little and realize what
constitutes constructive posting and what is valueless, and from there we can
all hope he can become a helpful member of the IT community. I will post my
test findings after completing them this weekend.

I suspect AVG support might be interested in looking at this issue -
especially since it seems like you have a pretty easy way to reproduce the
problem.

Looks like you might from here:

I have Avast installed on this machine and while extracting takes a
long time (13 or 14 minutes), it works.

I have AVG 8 on my notebook, and it just crashed after about 4 minutes
trying to extract.

I have been unable (noticed it today) to open anything from a ZIP file in
explorer. It says that 'Explorer has stopped working', and restarts the
program. It worked fine yesterday, and I did a system restore to yesterday's
configuration, and that didn't work. Also, AVG is refusing to run. Virus or
something less sinister?

Felix, it is a problem with AVG and windows vista. If AVG is having
troubles running, I recommend reinstalling it, and if it breaks after that
you might have a virus tampering with it. As for the zip file problem, the
best workaround is to get the program called 7zip from either sourceforge or
download.com. I have been working with AVG support about the issue with it
locking up windows vista explorer, but I can't tell you if they will actually
fix it or not.

Probably what Silk says. But if you think your issue is different, post up
the crash information-

If I bet you money that you had AVG anti-virus on your system, would I
win
that bet?

I have also been having similar problems. Funny thing is that on my XP box
with AVG installed I can open the ZIP files fine. On my freshly installed
vista box with a brand new hard drive I cannot. It is highly unlikely that
there is a virus on this machine unless the virus is embedded into the
Windows vista business edition that was shipped as part of my Action Pack
subscription from Microsoft. If anyone has a actual fix to this problem
other than telling me to give up the only decent free virus platform,
installing additional third party software that will cost additional money,
or getting rid of Vista, I would appreciate any feedback.

You didn't say what you're using to extract with, so with that said
have you tried using winrar to extract the zips?

If you disable or turn off AVG temporarily, does this then work?
If this is the case, have you followed up with AVG about them possibly
fixing this?
How did AVG get installed?
