Extract Backup Utility from XP Home Restore Disk

Both Microsoft and Dell indicate that the XP Backup Utility is
not loaded by default in XP Home edition. However, the Backup
Utility can be obtained from the regular version CD.
Can the Backup utility be obtained from the restore disk provided
with my Dell computer?

You can call Dell and ask them.
You can search the restore disk for "ntbackup.msi"
You can search Google for "download ntbackup.msi"

Look for a "Value Add" folder on your Dell CD. If you have one, it
may contain among other things the backup program. The backup program
is called "ntbackup.msi". Just double click the file and it will
start the install process. The backup program is not very good
though as it is suited for backing up to tape or floppies. Does not
backup directly to CDs, DVDs, nor can it span media. I suggest using
another program.

It can write to DVD and span media with http://www.firestreamer.com/fsdvd/

I suggest using

If Dell didn't include it then no. However you can download it from here
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#backup_home but you should
be advised that this tool has very limited functionality. It does not
compress files, it cannot backup to CD or DVD media, it can not create an
Automated System Recovery (ASR), it cannot split large files into smaller
segments, it can not open backup files created by the Backup program on
earlier versions of Windows. It is likely due to these limitations why it is
not installed by default on XP Home. Rather than mess around with this very
limited app you would better to invest in a decent backup utility.

The truth is that Backup Utility is a powerful tool that supports Automated
System Recovery, media spanning, volume shadow copy, media catalogs,
scheduling, Windows File Protection, all the set of the NTFS features like
alternate data streams, junction points, security quotas and so on. In other
words, all what is necessary to properly back up the system and user data.

The only major disadvantage was that it could not write directly to CD/DVD.
With Firestreamer-DVD http://www.firestreamer.com/fsdvd/, it can write
directly to DVD, too.

If not sure. To find out, search the CD for ntbackup.msi.

Or download the file from
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi
