Extra Startup Items

In WXP when I look at StartUp from Start>All Programs, I see that several
items related to downloaded programs but only one that I have put in myself
to start when WXP opens (the extra things include a couple of HP photo
shortcut items, digital line detector, Adobe Reader speed launch, etc.).
However, when I actually open StartUp (by right-clicking on it), I only find
the one item that I put there. What are the other items doing that are listed
in the window when it is viewed more directly through All Programs>StartUp?
Can I delete the HP items, for example?
Thanks.

Research what's running at startup by looking in task manager at the
processes. Use these resources to research what each one does, then decide
if you want it to run at startup.

Startup folder in [Start >All programs > Startup] actually contains items of
two folders [ Items of the current user and items of all users ] . If you
right click it and choose 'Open' and again right click it and choose 'Open
all users', you wil find all items that are under Startup menu in [Start >
All programs].
Instead of deleting the items , disable them by [ Start > Run > type
"msconfig" without quotes > "Startup" tab > Un check the items you don't want
].

Thanks Ayush. I did go in and disable a few items, but was reminded when I
re-booted that I had to go back in a reset the StartUp sequence under the
'General' tab so that it would be 'normal', since my actions had apparently
made it jump to 'Selective Startup'.

If you go back to normal startup then the programs are back. Don't do that.
It offers a check box in that dialog that says don't remind me of this
anymore. Check that. Note that Msconfig should be used only as a
troubleshooting tool. It is not intended for the long term managing of
start up programs. If you don't want them to startup permanently then
remove their entries from the start up folder or wherever they are starting
from.
