External Time Source redundancy question...

P

plsntn rules

Best practice is to use the net time /setsntp:"external
NTP server" command to synch up the PDCE to an external
time server..

Question I have is what happens if this external time
server dies or is unavailable for whatever reason...

How would you set the PDCE to automatically go to a
secondary/backup time server if the primary one fails? Is
this possible?

Only one time server can be configured in this way, there is no option to
enter a secondary or backup. So if the external time server dies you would
have to manually point it to another one. This would not be a catastrophe as
the windows clock on the PDCE will stay pretty accurate until the problem
gets fixed. There are more details in the w32time guide that can be
downloaded here. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216734
