external modem-just sits-doesn't move

Hi;
I have recently installed a zoom 56k external modem.
I have it attached through the serial port on my pent2.
I purchased it for faster internet of course, because I am very rural
and can access only through slow dial-up.
But I still seem to be uploading web pages slow, the modem just sits
there and doesn't move for long periods of time.
However I also have a pent4 which has an internal 56k modem,
and this doesn't happen to it.
My Pent2 is 450MHZ with 128megs Ram running WinME, and the Pent4 is
1.7GHZ with 256megs Ram running Win98SE.
Does anyone know what is slowing the Pent2 modem? Is the Pent2 just
too slow of a CPU or not enough Ram? I always thought that
external hardware modems were faster. All the settings seem fine
-could it be other things running in the background that are using the
comp. RAM or what??? If so, how do I track the culprit? I just can't
seem to figure this out!
ANY advice on this matter is appreciated!
Thanks,
Jinnie
BTW-they both use the same phone connection box, so I don't think it
could be line noise affecting the one and not the other.

hook the modem up to the p4 machine and see what happens. Are you using
them on the exact same phone outlet? You should contact your ISP and ask
for assistance.

check your serial settings to make sure the speed the computer talks to the
modem is not slow, it should be faster than the max speed of the modem
connection.

Not to the extent that it would limit the rate through a hardware modem.
or not enough Ram?

Hmmm, well, I don't believe so. Are you running more than one
application at a time?

The modem is not supposed to move.

I think OP meant the connection came to a stand-still?

It is a proper hardware modem so the specs of the home machine are
completely irrelevent. You could stick it on a 386 and the computer
wouldn't be the issue.
TBH I bought my parents one of these as it was dirt cheap. I ended up
buying them a Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro as the performance was dire.

That Diamond modem is AWESOME. Probably the best dial-up modem you can buy
at any price. But I've never heard of problems with Zoom external modems.
I have a friend who uses one with no problems, and they generally get good
reviews. -Dave

What is your connect speed now and before? You might have
spyware/virii.
