have added an external USB/firewire HDD. It's detected, I can see it in
device manager but can't access it in disk manager. It's returning an error
code 45, I think? (Not at the machine just now). Could it be because it's
formatted in FAT32 and not NTFS.

My problem is somewhat simliar to cjm
i had recently purchased a new harddisk and a IDE adapter which allows me to
connect my harddisk to be insert on usb
everything is good, XP is able to detect and install the harddisk
but i am unable to locate (open) this new harddisk (not under "My computer")
it is under "USB Mass storage Device"
i am using a labtop and i just want to put my data and stuff in to this
harddisk
do i need to reinstall window or use norton ghost for this?

You must format the drive before Windows will recognize it.

Good luck,

Ray

Thankyou. As the original poster of this thraed I quite clearly state drive
is formatted in FAT 32. This is a single partition.
