External Hard Drive

I want to install/connect a 200 GB or a 300GB external hard drive to my
computer. I download many mp3's, mpeg's, and other video clips that I want
to store in it. I've searched around the internet and eBay and the ones that
I like have the following features: USB 2.0 Cable A-B (data transfer rate up
to 480Mbps) or IDE to USB 2.0 and Firewire, 16MB buffer, 7200 rotational
speed (high performance for PCs / Mac and entry-level ATA servers, simple
plug and play installation, seek time 9 ms, interface Ultra ATA/100, can be
used with any brand of 3.5-inch internal IDE drives, supports up to UDMA/100
- No Max Hard Drive RPM, and it will allow multiple number of exernal drives
to my computer. The requirements of these hard drives are: 1. PC: Must have
Windows . . . 2000XP Pro, 2. 1 USB 2.0 port (download compatible with USB
1.1), 3. Windows 2000XP Pro does not require any drivers.

I don't know if they would be compatible with my computer nor do I know the
name of a very good brand. It will get a lot of use.

I thought I'd give you all of the info that I could find about my computer
in case it's needed (sorry for the overload of info):

It has an AMD Duron Processor, 945 MHz, 256 MB of RAM, Windows 200XP Pro V
2002, SP2.

Additional info:
1. Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
2. Disk Drives: IOMEGA ZIP 100, Maxtor 63040L0, WDC WD800JB-00ETA0
3. Display adapters: RADEON 8500 / RADEON 8500 LE (Microsoft Corporation)
4. DVD/CD-ROM drives: TSSTcorp CSW/DVD TS-H492A
5. Standard floppy disk controller
6. Floppy disc drive
7. IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel,

8. Network adapter: SiS 900 PCE Fast Ethernet Adapter (Speedstream 5100 -
4 lights)
9. Ports (COM & LPT): Communications Port (COM1), Communications Port
(COM2), Printer Port (LPT1)
10. Sound, video and game controllers: a. Audio Codecs, b. C-Media AC97

h. VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Companion Controller
i. VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Companion Controller
j. VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller

13. My c drive has 20GB and I have a separate internal 80GB hard drive.
Both are almost full and I'm planning on downloading a lot more files.

I have 2 questions:

1. Would the type of external hard drives stated above be compatible with my
computer?

2. What is a very good name brand?

I would understand that the second question is a matter of opinion but there
may be some brands that are known to not be good or have been noted to have
problems.

I also understand that you may or may not want to deal with name brands on
an open forum such as this.

If you would prefer to respond by email, my email address is
(e-mail address removed). I shall not hold anyone responsible for any and
all opinions that he/she may state. I'm a baby boomer who knows next to
nothing about hardware and I need plain, straight-forward good advice.

Thanks in advance . . . Denise

Hi Carey,

Great! Thanks. I found one on-line at Staples on sale for less that I
could have gotten it at eBay and it will be delivered on Friday too.

Yes Carey,
Thanks from me too. I was also in search of that and my requirements also
are the same.
