external hard disk

I have a Prolific PL3507 Combo Device (1394 ATAPI rev1.10) IEEE 1394 SBP2
Device for storing large files. Although I use "safe removal" to disconnect
it, every time I try to use it I get a message that it cannot be opened
because files are corrupted or something similar. Quick formatting is the
only solution to make it work which means files on the external disc are
deleted. How can I ensure secure storage of files without having to worry
that next time I try to open them they will have to be deleted for the disc
to work?

First check that they are recoverable BEFORE disconnecting. Perhaps they are
getting written bad.

Before disconnecting the external disc the files on it can be opened and
viewed properly. It's when I disconnect it and then connect it again that I
get the problem.
Is there any solution to that?

Thanks. It seems that the problem was I had not enabled cache writing for
this disk.
Now I have enabled it everything works fine.I'll check it a few more times
and then start using it properly.
