i have an external firewire drive on a dell running xp
pro. on boot up, the drive isn't recognized until i pull
the firewire plug out of the back of the drive and put it
back in. after that, xp sees it and everything spools up
fine. everything else about this system is stable - but
having to pull this plug out every time is a pain. how can
i fix this?

This may or may not help - it's just an idea to try:
If your BIOS has a setting that says something like "Plug and Play aware OS",
try changing that to the opposite setting that it now has.
This controls whether the BIOS or your OS initializes certain devices.
