Multiple firewire drives not recognized XP SP2

S

Hi all

XP SP2 (fresh install, not an upgrade) w/ SIIG 2-port firewire card
and 2 separate brand-new hard drives in firewire enclosures (boot C
drive is internal)

Each drive can be seen individually, but never both at the same time.
For example, Drive 1 can be recognized and data transferred to an
from. Can hotswap or reboot and have Drive 2 do the same. B
"seen" and "recognized" I mean both in Disk Mgm
and in Windows Explorer

But if I attempt to daisy-chain or plug each drive into a separat
port, then neither is recognized. I have tried every possible jumpe
combination

I know both ports work at the same time because I use Pro Tools' Dig
002 interface in one port and can use either external drive in th
other. The firewire card is not the problem IMHO....it seems to b
either something in Windows not "getting" it, or some issu
with the enclosures/drives

The card manufacturer has not responded, the enclosure manufacture
has attempted some things without success, and Microsoft tells me t
get SP 2?!

Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I have seen that, where two drives plugged into separate ports, only one is
recognized. Couple of things you can try:

Install post sp2 update KB887170 which fixes problems when more than 1
drive is daisychained. You will have to ask m$oft for password after
proving your copy of sp2 is legit. You could also google for
WindowsXP-KB887170-x86-enu.exe but you might not get the latest 1394 fix.

Check for latest firmware on the firewire controller(s). I had to upgrade a
prolific chipset to fix a similar problem.

Verify that the volume serial numbers are different for the two external
drives.

Make sure they have different volume serial#.
