External drive driver not detected over usb

I recently purchased an external usb hard drive, IBM
40GB, My XP in my Home PC cannot detect the device. I
plug it in, and message on the driver appear. I ran through all of the
USB hardware troubleshooting steps for XP but no available driver fix in.

However, my IBM notebook running on same XP Pro is able to detect the usb external drive. I tried to copy the drivers under system32 over to the PC but it cannot work. My PC is having an OEM version of a no brand PC.

Does anyone have any ideas?

The usb case for my IBM external h/disk does not have any drivers for XP for this drive, only 98SE, which will not install on XP)

The reason there are no XP drivers is because it should be natively
supported by Windows. Make sure that you ahve the latest chipset
drivers for your motherboard, which will ensure that your USB controller
is up to date. Next try plugging it back in. Now right click on My
Computer, click Manage, and click on Disk Management. Do you see the
drive there?

I had the same problem with a Western Digital hard drive. Turned out
had to download update #826603 from the microsoft website. The updat
deals with some issues with USB 1.1 (which is what I had).

Hope this helps.
