One of my PCs recognizes, but does not install, my recently purchased
Western Digital 750 gig Caviar SATA external drive coupled with USB in
a Bytecc box. I understand that USB devices are PnP and are designed
to do just that. plug and play.

In fact, the WD 750 drive operates perfectly on my older HP 1800 Ghz
PC with XP Pro FAT32, but when plugged into my newer HP 2800 Ghz PC XP
Pro with NTFS, the new hardware wizard opens and cannot locate the
"appropriate" driver. I've checked the driver cache and the USB 2.0
drivers appear to be present. I also downloaded drivers fron Western
Digital and, following the suggestions from another newsserver,
changed the external WG 750 HDD format to NTFS.

I can swap my USB external ZIP drive and my USB external DVD/CD
burner between the two PC's.

The only other variable is that I recently installed Windows XP Pro
SP3 on the offending HP PC NTFS, The older HP PC FAT32 runs on XP Pro
SP1.

Finally, the problem is that when the (WG 750 HDD NTFS) USB is plugged
into the newer HP 2800 Ghz PC XP Pro with NTFS, the new hardware
wizard recognizes the drive, searches for the USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge
drivers, but fails to install. I suspect that the appropriate .inf
file may be missing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Note that Windows XP SP3 is still a beta product, currently in testing.
As this seems to be the only variable in otherwise, a priori working
systems, one can speculate that a part of SP3 is in conflict with a
hardware component in HP PC NTFS. Missing an *.inf file can only invite
such a failure.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What does [start], [run], "diskmgmt.msc" report?
