It is being recognised as a reader and I can put all types of cds in
and they're recognised fine but when I try to burn anything, all of my
software keeps saying things like "No Recorder" (Roxio Easy CD), "No
medium inserted or drive not ready" (Nero). And SmartBurn says "Drive
Type = COMBO Disc Type = NO MEDIA" when I ask for info on disk.
Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

as a plug and play device the external recorder didn't have a disk to
put drivers on my pc and that's why i've probaly not found any drivers.
i MIGHT have downloaded and upgraded a firmware which I'm not very sure
about. could this have adverse affect to what is happening?
This was genuinely additional information, not just an elaborate
"bump".
