dvdr not recognised

hi can anyone help me
i have an emprex 1108 ui external dvd writer, when i go to my computer it
does not recognise it as dvdr drive instead it says cd rom. i looked in the
event viewer and it showed me this message.

Did you install some type of driver for this external unit?

Microsoft uses DVD writer as DVD Rom drives. You need additional software to
be able to create DVD media.
