External CD drives missing

Unfortunately I am my mother's computer expert (and I laugh as I am typing
this)!! She just recently tried to play a music CD and it would not play.
Her computer is just showing a "c" drive and "a" drive. Under "my computer"
it does not show any other drives. I have no idea what has happened . . . I
did do a restore to an earlier point but no such luck. They still were not
there. In looking at the Microsoft website, I thought I saw some information
about going into the registry. I stay far away from the registry because I
know I can screw it up big time. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
try and regain them? The operating system is Windows XP.
