I'm assuming you want to change the default program for opening certain file
types? Simplest way is to right click the file, select "open with", check
the box to "Always use this program..." then browse to the exe you want.
Alternatively (and if you want to add actions) it is easy enough via
Start>Folder Options>File Types.

If the settings don't stick it is because you need to change the options in
the hijacking program.

My first choice would be WAssociate:
URL. http://www.xs4all.nl/~wstudios/Associate/index.html
DDL. http://www.xs4all.nl/~wstudios/Associate/WAssociate.zip

N.B. Nothing to do with P.C. Magazine as far as I know...

Second choice would be File Assocaition Editor:
URL. http://www.angelfire.com/biz/rhaminisys/fileasoc.html
DDL. http://www.angelfire.com/biz/rhaminisys/binaries/fileasoc.zip

Both are well written, both are freeware, my personal preference is the
former, but YMMV.

Yes i know. But if that *ACTUALLY WORKED* i would need this. As i wrote,
media player keeps changing the associations back to itself.

If the settings don't stick it is because you need to change the options in
the hijacking program.

Which i keep doing, and it keeps setting them back as well.

Is that the official name?

I haven't a clue ;) but when I saw "extension" editor my first thought
was file renamers. . . didn't sound like that was what you wanted. . .
Thanks, and to the rest as well :)
