Expression Web Upgrade

I notice that there is an upgrade version of Expression Web available. Has
anyone tried it? What are the pros and cons? Any problems?

Expression is the latest version of web design software from Microsoft.
There will be no more versions of FrontPage. Expression offers the same
features as FrontPage plus more. You shouldn't have any trouble working
with an existing web site in Expression. You should try the Expression news
group. There are a lot more people there that have experience with it.

Many of the members on this group use Expression now (including the MVP's).

Note, it's not really an upgrade - you can still use Frontpage as well as
Expression. Normally "upgrading" means you can no longer use the previous
version e.g. an upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2007 doesn't let you
continue using Office 2003, even on a different PC).

The upgrade situatioin with Expression is different because it is not a "new
version" of Frontpage. The upgrade price for the software is just there for
the convenience of those who already use Frontpage.

Pros: - standards based coding and CSS support and Doctypes. Compliant with
W3C standards and pretty much (all) the major browsers. Much more compliant
than Frontpage was.

It supports .Net 2.0 (requiring Windows server), but you can develop sites
for Linux, just not use the .Net features. (whether this is a Pro or Con I
don't know - depends on whether you're pro-linux or not.

Cons - steeper learning curve, but well worth the effort of learning it.
Many of the "good" features of FP are gone, but it lets you work with
existing FP 'bots' like include pages and some of the wizards like the db
interface wizard, but not add new ones.

Next version apparently will have better support for PHP.

The version on the web is a trial (60 days - better than the usual 10 or 15
or 20 days of most other trials) - but it should be in the shops in your
location.
