how do i export an email dlist to text or excel. i'm using office 2003.

Open the DL and click File>Save As. Select "Text Only" in the "Save as
type" drop-down. This creates a tab-separated values file that Excel can
read.

thanks for replying. i tried that but it only gives me the name of the dl. is
there something else i need to do to actually export the email addresses
within the dl?

Nope. If you open the DL so you can see all the names, then save it as I
describe, you'll have a TSV file (ending in .txt) containing all the
members, one name/address pair per row.
