Explorer slow performance when networked

This problem has been driving me crazy, even formatting and reinstalling
windows did not solve it.

When my computer is connected to the network performance is terrible:
Right click on a document file (most types) there is a 40 second delay
before the shortcut menu appears. This happens on both local and network
files.
I can right click on a folder, shortcut or exe file and there is no delay.
If I just left click (select) and hit the delete key there is a similar 40
second lag before the question "are you sure..?"

Deleting all network drive mappings does not help, but unplugging the
network cable does.

We have a SBS2003 domain, but no other computers on the network are doing
this.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

When Right-clicking on a file, do any third-party context menu options
appear?
If there are third-party context menu items, then that means that the object
must be checked per request.
If the object is installed on a network server, there will be a delay.

Check the DNS settings on your local computer. They should only point to
the server. The server should only point to itself with forwarders set
up for Internet access. Since all the other computers work fine, the
server's DNS is probably correct.
