Explorer Shuts Down

Guest

This problem began shortly after installing new updates for XP. When I open
any explorer window (e.g. My Documents), once I select the file that I want
to use, I get the following error message:
"Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

It then closes and asks me to send a report. I have rebooted several times,
but to no avail.
Thanks for your help (you have been very helpful in the past).

Recommendations:
Go to Start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press OK. In the Event Viewer, click on Applications in the menu and look for any "X" error messages that coincide with the time the error occured. Double click the error message to see the details. At the top/right of the details dialog box, click the small icon that looks like 2 text pages to copy the error message and paste the message back here in a reply to this post.

Many problems with Explorer are caused by spyware applications that invade the system. You should get the free version of AdAware and Spybot to help detect and remove these applications.

This is all I'm getting for this particular version of this error message.

"Explanation:
The indicated program stopped unexpectedly. The message contains details on which program and module stopped. A matching event with Event ID 1001 might also appear in the event log. This matching event displays information about the specific error that occurred."

Try the following.

Quit all programs that are running.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (including the space) and then click OK.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in shcodvw.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

Now try to re-create the error.

This is directed to Ronnie Vernon.
I encountered this problem of Explorer.exe shutting down with the error msg
when I right-clicked on any file or folder. Your solution appears to have
taken care of that. (regsvr 32 shdocvw.dll) However, I decided to invoke the
process that got me this error in the first place. That was, right-clicking
on my A-drive to format a floppy. The other right-click problems followed.
This time, however, the other folders on my hard-drives were not affected
but, rt-clking on A: caused the Explorer error message and locked the GUI. I
was able to cancel the "not responding" process through the Task Manager
(invoked with Ctrl+A+Del) and the GUI refreshed.
I still have the problem rt-clking on A: but no longer on other files or
folders.
I'd appreciate any ideas on this.
Thanks
