Explorer refreshes continually

Hi all,

I've been given a PC to fix where the owner has 'messed
about with' various things in a vain attempt to speed his
pc up.

One of the problems now is that windows explorer (the file
explorer, not internet explorer)continually refreshes the
folder tree. You can still browse to where you need to,
but the refreshing is very annoying.

Anyone seen this before?

Repair Install -

Be careful taking on the task of repairing a PC that belongs to
a "Twiddler". You may spend hours getting it put right only to
have the same situation some time from now. The best thing to
do is fix it - Make an Image, and teach the user how to restore
it. Then on the next "Twiddled-till it won't boot", you can just
have them use the Image to restore it.

Does this PC have an anti-virus installed? Have you checked fro any
possible viruses and also checked for hidden spyware programs?

Yves,

Yes there is a full Norton anti-virus package. There are
no viruses that I can find (although it looks like there
once was because there is an auto-dialler to an unsavoury
site in his system directory!)

As for spyware, not sure. I'll need to look closely. There
are lots and lots of 'svchost's running...

There's a registry setting for Explorer refreshing; perhaps he monkeyed
with it:

Both solutions (repairing IE6 and changing the registry value noted) are
worth checking.
