Explorer problem No files open

Everytime I try and browse through explorer, or open any
file folder for that matter the screen goes blank and
then comes back and pretends I didn't do anything. A
select number of programs work (Windows Media, MSN
explorer but not Internet Explorer, and AIM) but I can't
open and files.
I've scanned for viruses, and it's not a problem with
memory. I restarted my computer to a previous date, but
can't do much else since I can't open anything like the
control panel. I'm in desperate need of help, I can't
lose everything on my computer by reinstalling windows!
Does anyone know what the problem is? Explorer corrupted
or something? Can someone help?

i was told by comapaq that the only thing to do was a full system restore.....im with you i have soo much to loose, but no way to do a back up disk cause i cant get in to it.
