explorer pauses when selecting file/directory

greetings all,

i've installed a fresh copy of XP on one of my machines. i've disabled sound
events and have a very fast HD. whenever i select a file or folder in
explorer, there is a brief but noticeable pause (less than a second). i'm
assuming that explorer is trying to get info on the files. i've deselected
'display file size information in folder tips' and 'show popup description'
in Folder Options / View, but to no avail. the problem remains.

this is similar to the AVI search slowdown, but it's happening with all
files. the drive is FAT32 formatted, but the problem occurs on the NTFS
partition as well.

any thoughts or insights are appreciated.

thanks in advance~!

that feature was already deselected. not sure if it matters, but all of the
slowdown occurs when i browse my local files.

thanks for the reply,

any other takers?

i've searched all over the net, even on the wonderful Kelly's Corner, for a
solution to this and cannot find one.

please help if you can,
