Explorer not starting from command line or shortcut

I can't start Explorer using a shortcut
(Target="C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e") which, until a week or so ago,
worked fine. Trying to start explorer.exe from the command line also
doesn't work. I *CAN* right-click "my computer" and select "explore".
Event log doesn't show anything unusual. I'm in the administrators
group, and that group has full rights to the shortcut, to
"c:\windows\explorer.exe" and to "c:\windows\explorer.scf" (which
doesn't display it's extension in Explorer, but does in DOS. Command
line rules). BTW, here's "explorer.scf":

----- cut here -----
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,1

[Taskbar]
Command=Explorer
----- cut here -----

What's a scf file?
http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=scf&Search=Search

In your dos window type in SET
see if your pathext even shows it.

Never mind, had to edit the file to see the extension:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,1

[Taskbar]
Command=Explorer

Doesn't seem to do anything, but I've been wrong before :)
I rename'd it and nothing missed it.

You could download and run FileMon and see what's really going on when
you run explorer.

Actually, I rebooted and, lo and behold, things were working again. My
mistake, I should remember that it's only Windows. I get confused
sometimes thinking it's an operating system.
