Explorer Message, possible virus?

Everyday I use the internet to check my email. Within a
few minutes of turning the darn thing on I get an Explorer
error message. It says: This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down. When I click on
close, the box closes but so does everything else on my
computer and all I'm able to see is the background.
Nothing works after that and I have to reboot my
computer. Usually it only does it when I'm actually using
the internet, but last night I didn't have the internet
open and it came up out of nowhere. It is extremely
frustration. Can anyone help?
