Not unreasonable, no -- my machine right now has almost double that
dedicated to explorer.exe.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. I'm just puzzled as to why
it appears in the task mgr list sometimes, but other times it does not.

That's highly impossible unless your desktop isn't loading.

it is completely possible ! explorer.exe is the windows shell, or GUI if
you will.

you can kill the explorer.exe process and still use your computer, except
that unless you have some other means of launching programs, you need to
ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the task manager/program's tab and click 'new
task' to start any program.

i haven't experimented with booting up with NO shell specified, but many
different program's can act as the 'shell'. not all function's may be
present, but it is possible.

http://www.shellcity.net/ - website with MANY shell replacement's for
windows, although most i found to be too involved take the time to learn to
implement, but then i'm lazy.

http://home.adelphia.net/~thisnthat/menuhell/index.htm - is a link to a
shell replacement i wrote a while ago, as an experiment. i am currently in
the process of re-writing this to fully support all shell function's. i
currently use this as a task launcher only, with the system tray ripped
out. so at this point, i can kill explorer.exe and just use my program to
launch everything. it's nice sometimes to just see a full-screen background
with no icons on it what-so-ever.

regards,

DanS
