Explorer.exe taking system resources at boot

I have a windows XP Media Center Edition Dell machine that has explorer.exe
hogging up system resources during boot time on all the user accounts and
won't release it. When I logged on as the administrator in safe mode it runs
good. I installed an ran Spybot and Windows defender to clean up any unwanted
spyware which it did, but explorer.exe still hosing the system. I also
updated and ran Norton AV scan and it ran all night, but the explorer.exe is
keeping it from finishing. I am running the scan as an administrator and at
least now it is running. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Just curious here. Why is there no AV vendors website listed in your
instructions for Symantec. That is what this PC has installed on it. Thanks

My Multi AV Scanning Tool does NOT include a Symantec command line scanner.

The idea here is to use scannerd OTHER than what you have to see if they catch what
Symantec/Norton may have missed.

Oh so I should run it with all four? I won't be able to run it until this
afternoon. I will keep you posted

It worked great. It took awhile to run everything, but after all said and
done that solved my problem. I will use your utilities as part of my arsenal
to fix computers. I will look on your site for a place to make a donation.
Thanks again.

OK Bob
Thanx for updating the thread. :)

BTW: I would like to see a log snippet of what was found. Such feedback is good for
improvements to the Multi AV Scanning Tool to assist others.
