Explorer.exe GPF On Startup

Help... I have Windows XP SP2 on a Sony laptop. The other day I was infected
with something and my antivirus was disabled. I dont even know the name of
the virus because I can not launch norton nor can I even run a norton online
virus scan. I was able to run Mc Affee online scan but it tells me there are
no virus found. I know its a trojan. I ran Spy Bot Search And Destroy few
times. I even tried to do a windows update but can not do that in safe mode.
Basically I can run in safe mode fine, actully i am using it to write this
message. But booting in normal mode causes explorer.exe to gpf everytime. the
login screen comes up and right after i log in explorer.exe will gpf. I have
done everything i can think of. I even tried running SFC /Scannow but that
will not run in safe mode. Help!! I dont want to format the drive nor do i
have the xp cd to reinstall.

Hello,

You may wish to try FileResearchCenter.com. It should run fine in Safe Mode
and be able to "show" you if there are any harmful items installed and
active (or possibly become active in normal mode). You may then be able to
see what you need to remove.
http://www.fileresearchcenter.com (Click the Help button on the front page)

If that does not help and you would like to submit me a diagnostic using the
link below (no personal information is transmitted) I would be happy to take
a look at critical system areas and I may be able to spot what the problem
is/might be and provide you some simple instructions to remove the problem
and get yourself back to running in non-safe mode.

I will post my findings back to the group so everyone can see the results.
