Explorer.exe error Ref # 0x77f5b2ab

When I try to open certain folders in windows expolorer
(and it seems to be suspiciously folders which
contain .GIF files - not containing any viruses), windows
explorer crashes and the following dialog box comes up.

[explorer.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x77f5b2ab" referenced memory
at "0x00000014". The memory could not be "read". Click on
OK to terminate the program.]

These .GIF files also seem to be affected other programs
such as Adobe Photoshop (when I try to save files as a
different file type Photoshop crashes with error message).

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem after installing my Adobe programs and a response to my post on another XP group said that the fix requires a system reinstall as the system is corrupted. Haven't seen any other replies to the contrary. I was hoping someone had a better fix than starting all over again.

I tried a few additional things before the big 'reinstall' and I seemed to have corrected the problem. I ran Spybot and AdAware to make sure I had not trojans, etc. uninstalled the last 2 programs I installed (and rebooted after each uninstall). I ran sfc /scannow. tThen did a system restore. I had to do the system restore 2 times as the first date I chose didn't fix it, but going back one week did (for some reason). Not getting the error notifications and only have to fix a few program links. But, that's a lot better than a reinstall.

Hope this helps.
