Explorer.exe crashes when Start button is activated

Whenever I click on the Start button or click the start key on the keyboard
windows explorer crashes preventing the Start menu from displaying. The
event logger gives me the two following errors whenever I press the button.
I've been trying to figure out how to fix this issue and I can not find
anything related to explorer.exe and user32.dll problems. I just recently
moved and have not located the windows install disks so reinstalling windows
would be my last choice to fix the issue.

Hi Pat,
Are you sure when moving things the Laptop didn't knocked about or fell on
the floor.
Start with system Restore first and see if it will work for you.
If still no joy after sys R read this link about his error:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184802/
http://ask.support.microsoft.com/kb/266668
To download the file although I don't know your OS version you can search
for the right file for your version but you need you CD or can get somebody
else have the same OS version:
http://dwonload.microsoft.com/download/a/f/7/af7777e5-7dcd-4800-8a0a-b18336565f5b/DLL_bestprac.do...
If nothing from the above make sense please tell us more about your OS
version and any applications you have installed on now.
HTH.
Please let us know.
Regards,
nass

Nass,

Sorry, I should have said I'm running WinXP SP2 with all the updates for the
system completed. System Restore CD only has one option on it from Toshiba
and that is to reformat the HDD only not a way to to do reinstall of windows
only. Their has to be a different way to fix it other than a format and
reload. The first link I checked my registry and for the crss file it
matches exactaly what is in the KB description. Second link not sure why I
need to relink the Add/remove tool but did it anyways. The link for the
download is invalid even when I correct the spelling of download in the link.
If I was able to find my other systems Win XP would a reinstall of of
Windows on top of the current system work? Also this issue started before we
moved homes but why does that matter? Are you thinking the system memory has
been damaged or corrupted?

Hi pat,
Sorry for the mistypo, When I meant with System Restore is to Restore to an
earlier Date on your machine by doing this click on the Start >> All programsdate when things were in a working Order.
Here the link to explain the Restore in Deepth:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084/

If you have a friend has the same OS CD version you can Run this Command in
the Run Command by typing: sfc /scannow *Notice the space between sfc and
/scannow* and Press Ok to run it and wait for it, you may be asked to put
the XP CD in if the File System Checker find a corrupt core file on the
system and need to repair it from the CD.
When you mentioned you moved house I thought the Computer may be Dropped or
Kicked hard that can render your HDD and cause trouble when you boot up, but
since you said before the move this option is invalid.
HTH.
Please report back with your Findings.
Regards,
nass
