explorer.exe crashes reading the file-system

Hi,
the process explorer.exe uses all cpu resources (98-99%) when I try to
use it to browse the file-system and it doesn't show me the content of
any folder.
When it tries to get a list of files double-clicking on a folder icon
it goes crazy, it takes all the cpu and I have to kill the process from
task manager, if I restart the process everything is the same: all ok
since I browse the file system using explorer.exe (now I'm using Total
Commander).
Other functionalities of explorer.exe are ok: toolbar's
functionalities work correctly, the desktop is built correctly and
desktop links to applications work (but I can't browse applications
using Start->Programs->SoftwareAuthor: here is like browsing
file-system).
It's the third time i reinstall windows-xp on my new laptop. The firs
two times the problem rised quite early, this time I worked for a week
before the problem raised and I didn't install any new software in the
last tree days.
Other notes:
The laptop is a dell inspiron 9300
Antivirus: nod32
Every high-priority updates were installed from windows update
Explorer.exe works correctly if I boot windows in safe-mode

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Look in the application and system logs for Error and Warning Reports
and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

What arrangements do you have for dealing with spyware?

Hope this helps.
