Explorer.exe crash when searching

The explorer.exe process crashing when attempting to use the classic Windows
Search (default OS search feature) on WXP Home SP2. I had the full MSN Search
Toolbar and had the Windows Desktop Search installed (v. 2.05.0001.1119).

It always fails when i try to do a search "A Word or Phrase in the File"
on the first attempt (after a fresh boot). -- explorer.exe crashes ("Faulting
application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown,
version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x7d9ccc27." - not very helpful) & Windows
suggests about Data Execution Prevention (DEP) being the cause of having
to close this process. Not so, I have tried setting explorer.exe as an
exception to DEP rules, no luck...

a. Start menu, Search, Start "contains" search -- explorer.exe crashes
adventually

I have since then uninstalled the msn search bar, and the windows desktop
search and had no success correcting the issue. Is there a fix? Is there
bad registry data that I need to remove in order to correct the problem???

thanks ahead for any assistance.

Matt.

p.s. I have posted this already and have had no luck or additional solutions
offered, please, I really need help on this one.

Hi Matt,

well, that kind of problems are very difficult to solve and
also it is very difficult to find the "bad code" that is responsible
for the crash if you are not a programmer and are not used to
debug asm code. But a very common problem is a faulty shell
extension that causes the error. You should use a tool (or
even do it by hand if you are familliar with COM registry
entries) to remove/disable additional non-standart shell extensions
in your explorers namespace. A very handy tool ist the ShellExView:

Always do a Registry and System Backup before you modify your System
and ensure that you can restore in any case of problems, even when your
System does not boot! Bear this in your mind, before you do anything!!!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately your suggestion didn't help as I
coudln't locate any "bad" shell extension...

BUT I did find out what the problem was... well it did seem random but I
started narrowing down the searches and adventually doing a search filetype
bassis. After a couple of hours of frustration, I came to notice that it was
only on .zip extensions that this would happen. I checked to see the the
type of compression software that was installed and sure enough winzip 8.0
sr1 was installed... I thought that this was a little strange because I have
ran winzip on numerous systems and never had an issue arrise.

Guess its just one of those things, I have since then uninstalled winzip
from the system and it is now stable and crash free. I might reinstall
winzzip to see if it was just maybe a freak of nature... it might and might
not happen again...

Thanks for your help, btw it was error code 7d9ccc27 when explorer.exe
crashes.
