Explorer.exe Application Error

When i click 'SEARCH' from the start menu the OS searches for a short time
then puts up the error:
Explorer.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x79004fcb" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the problem.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.
Whichever one I click terminates the program.
Any advice please on how to repair?
Thanks
Andrew

Many thanks for your very detailed reply.
I have done all the things that you ask in Part 1. There were only two
unverified add-ons and I disabled then re-enabled them both (as the following
process failed with them disabled and enabled). I also clicked the 'Learn
more bout add-ons' on the same page as the add-on list but this failed with
the same error that I reported previously.
I then started on Part 2.
I typed in the onecare address into my browser and get to the point where I
install the tool (I also turn off my pop-up blocker) but it crashes again
with the same error that I reported previously. I also used the 'Help and
Support' program from the start menu and typed in 'Dr Watson'. It was found
but when I clicked 'Dr Watson' in the list that it put up it also failed with
the same error.
I am totally lost and hope that you can assist me further.
Many thanks

Some further information.
I already have Ad-aware and Spybot on my computer. I have run Spybot and all
it found was 3 tracking cookies which I've fixed. I ran Memtest 3.5 which I

Could you try the following please:
Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some
light and post it back in your next post by performing the following and also
the System File Checker (SFC) sfc /scannow:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Do you have any third-party toolbars installed?, if you do try to uninstall
for now (you can download later the latest version) and run disk cleanup and
system file checker by opening the Run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run, does it help?.

Also download the Hijackthis and send me the log at:

Many thanks for your assistance from the Windows Newsgroup.
I should point out that I had a boot failure about a fortnight ago and had
to refresh Windows from the CD. This wasn't ideal because the copy of WinXP
Pro that I had only had SP1 on it and I had to download SP2 and loads of
updates from Windows Update.
My system is in a mess though and I would be prepared to do this again if
advised.
I cannot download any software from third party sites such as Hijack This or
any other Anti-Spyware. Luckily I have Hijack This already installed so I
could run the scan. As soon as I click download on a website I get the error
that I've reported previously and if I click OK or Cancel the whole download
and explorer window terminates.
I ran sfc /scannow but after a short time it asked for the Windows XP CD:
Windows File Protection.
'Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the
DLL cache.
Insert your copy of Windows XP Pro CD-ROM now.
I inserted the CD however it didn't appear to copy any files because I ran
the sfc /scannow 5 times and it came up with the above message. I also
inserted the CD every time it asked for it.
I have attached the Event Viewer Logs.
System and Application were the only ones with entries in them.
Many thanks again
