Sam S.
I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all updates, I have one hard
drive on my system.
If I try and copy or move a file to or from anywhere other than the root
directory of the C: drive, I get a crash with the following error
message:
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
soory for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something...etc"
For example, I can copy or move a file from the desktop to the root
directory of C drive, but not to the floppy drive, or eny other
directory on C:, or anywhere else on our network.
Likewise I can copy a file from another PC on our network, or from my
PCs A drive to the root directory of my C drive with no problem, but
cannot copy the file to anywhere else on my PC's hard drive.
I can, however, open any application and save a file to anywhere on my
hard drive without the problem.
I have run chkdsk at boot up (with both boxes ticked) but it has not
fixed things. However, when I run Chkdsk in DOS mode within Windows, it
tells me that "Windows found problems with the file system. Run CHKDSK
with the fix option to correct these." This does not resolve the problem
however, and the DOS CHKDSK continues to report file errors, no matter
how many times I run CHKDSK at boot up with the fix option enabled.
My next move would be to use the XP repair console or even reload XP (as
opposed to clean install), but my XP is the original version so I would
be nervous about screwing things up more.
Any suggestions appreciated.
