If I switch to Administrator from Default User [or log on initially as
Administrator]and open explorer I get a pop-up dialog
"Validation failed for VSINIT.DLL ...(several files)"
"You are probably missing the necessary root certificates"

I have run SFC /scannow from Administrator and Default user but the problem
is not fixed.

Searching the System disk reveals that VSINIT.DLL exists as on version in
windows\System32 and a newer version In the ZoneAlarm Folder.

Any thing else I can do? I do not want to undertake a heroic repair install
as the system runs perfectly in default user mode.

You can Install the SP2 and remove zoneAllarm since you have Microsoft
Firewall integrated in Windows XP SP2

No that is not the whole answer as I have SP2 installed and it shows (when I
am running as Administrator) that the Firewall is OK because it is running
ZA! But you have given me a good pointer, to disable fast user switching and
only run Administrator from a separate boot.

I have run sfc /scannow in Administrator mode and this has restored the
original Microsoft versions of the referenced files.

I will try booting as administrator and see if the firewall behaves as the
default SP2 firewall. Although this gives only inward protection it should
be enough as in accordance with the Microsoft dogma I do not browse the net
while logged on as The Administrator.

I had switched to Administrator to try and fix a problem with hard drive
icons in Windows Explorer when I ran into this ZA problem which caused
Explorer.exe to crash.

The built in firewall does not stop outgoing connections, such as
malware "phoning home". It is better to use a third party firewall such
as zone alarm that monitors both directions.

Since vsinit.dll is a zone alarm file try uninstalling zone alarm, then
reinstalling it. You can also post to the zone alarm forum.
