can someone translate this error message, please

T

tim....

I have a laptop which I haven't connected to the internet for over a year on
which I run Zonealarm.

when I did so today, when ZA started up I get the message

"Validation failed for C:\Windows|System32|VSINIT.DLL You are probably
missing a root certificate."

What the flip is a root certificate and how do I get one?

Obviously I am missing a year's lot of updates, but this computer ran
happily without those updates a year ago so why won't it do so now?

(I've tried removing ZA but I can't because I get the same error, and I
tried loading the latest version on top but it won't do that because of some
other gobbledygook error message that mere mortals can't understand).

TIA

Maybe you get tired of being told, but "Google
is your friend." Five minutes ago I didn't know
what they are either, but Google it and you'll
find out too.

Nope, because without my firewall in place I was loath to go trawling around
the net

You are aware that if you are on Usenet, you are still on the Internet,
correct? And people can just as easily hack into your PC...

Also, you can always enable the Windows firewall. Although it doesn't
offer outgoing protection, incoming protection is the important type to
have in the first place. If something unsavory were to enter your PC, it
could easily work around Zone Alarm or any other firewall, bypassing any
outbound protection you thought you had!

Solution:

ZoneAlarm 6.5 or below will no longer function.

Un-install your version of ZoneAlarm. What you will need to do is set
the PC's clock back prior to July 15, then run the uninstall to remove
the program. If you have a valid, genuine ZoneAlarm license key in good
standing you will need to upgrade by downloading version 8.0.400.020

Note: Windows ME, 98, 98se and Windows 2000 are not supported in version
8.0
