explorer callback?

Q:
How and Why does a program depends on explorer? Is it used to perform some
kind of call back or what?

If explorer.exe is runnig, everything works fine, but if I kill explorer.exe
(to free some RAM), then this program will not work properly:
I use a DCOM based simulator (Ansoft - Simplorer) and any changes to the
VHDL code will not affect a new simulation if explorer.exe is not running.

As far as I know explorer.exe runs your desktop. I of course could be
totally mistaken.

Exactly! And if I close the desktop (I don't need it when I only use one
application):
start --> shutdown --> CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+Cancel

then any changes I make to the VHDL model will not result in updated
simulation results. It is strange why some applications depends on the
desktop for synchronisation between it's components.
