Windows Explorer rt-clicking results in termination

G

Guest

I have been troubleshooting this situation for weeks w/o any success. If
anyone HAS encountered this and knows an answer, pls post it!

Often, when rt-clicking an object or attempting to delete an active object,
Explorer will just hang there for 5-7 seconds or so trying to open up the
Context/Confirmation window (as is appropriate for what I clicked/pressed),
but eventually fails with the Dr. Watson reporting tool. For the longest time
the details of the reporting process kept stating that MS did not know why
the error occurred but urged me to upgrade to SP2. So finally I gave in and
did so. But the problem persists.

I have also tried to accomplish my file management tasks using My Computer
and Internet Explorer GUIs, but they also exhibit the same behavior.

This does not affect all objects (but does seem to affect all object-TYPES).
And, surprisingly, an object previously affected will sometimes "right"
itself and later Explorer will work properly with it. Usually this will be
noticed subsequent to some kind of adjustment (usually permissions resetting,
or ownership change) to an object above it in the tree, but by no means
always. Sometimes I can change ownerships on a different volume and go back
to a previosuly errant object and it will then behave properly, on
occasion...8o() but no consistency has been identified.

This situation is known to NOT be correctable by any kind of reboot.

Sometimes I can move an affeceted object to another location, and then
succesfully perform the Rt-click or deletion process, and then again
sometimes not. In those NOT occasions I have tried moving the parent folder,
and then sometimes _that_ will succeed, others not.

I have Scandisk/CHKDSK/NortonDiskDoctor/Spinrite 'd all disks so many times
I am certain by now that each one of these programs is on a first-name-basis
with each and every byte on my disks, but no errors are being detected or,
sadly, repaired (if they even exist, which I do not believe the troubles are
in the files, disks or directories, but within Explorer or a sub-component...)

If anyone can tell me how I can "reinstall/restore" Explorer.exe (with all
of its sub-parts, which I don't know), please post that!

What I am also interested in some assistance with is how or where-can-I-go
to get documentation on what Windows components (like .dll's, etc.) are
ingredients of Explorer.exe, IExplore.exe and
whatever-it-is-that-drives-MyComputer.exe (although I suspect that it is
still Explorer.exe or the root prog Explore.exe).
My present idea is to research these subcomponents and find what common
pieces there are among/between them and see if any patch/upgrade/other SW
install has inadvertantly stepped on them which is causing this behavior in
Explorer.

Any MS-MVP's that can help me with finding this documentation out there?
I've tried TechNet searching for several hours the last two days to no
avail... I could sure use some assistance in wihich direction to head.

Thanks!

Hi,

Sounds like something is loading in the context menu and is hanging. The
trouble is figuring out what it is. Examine these keys for unneeded entries:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

My observations are that AVG7 (AVG Free anti-virus by Grisoft), WinImp (a
file compression/archifing tool) and InCD (a component of Nero CD-burning SW)
all appear to be possible candidates. All three are relatively new to me and
installed at about the same time. However, I think that the primary candidate
is WinImp because it is NOT showing up in ShellExView but certainly exists in
Context Menus (ergo the handler(s) must be somewhere). And after having
uninstalled WinImp the errant rt-click-become-toast behavior has not recurred
(although not enough time/rt-click events have occurred for me to be
comfortable in RELYing on the problem as being resolved, Explorer has gone
much longer than usual w/o self-destructing).
I wouldn't think that Nero w/b the culprit as it is a too well-known,
established and cared-for appln, and therefore would expect more similar
episodes of what I've encountered be found on my web researches of this
problem.
Pretty much the same as in re: AVG, but I am going to hold off on using it a
bit until I can more gradually integrate it into the environment.
Your comments?

Ramesh!
Thanks not only for the article, but for showing me a *valuable* new(-to-me)
resource for researching XP woes. Most GRATEFULLY Appreciative!!!

I'm off now to re-install XP (for the above and a few other reasons) and
will be much more sensitive to newly added programs. Will post a followup
when I get back up.

Cheers!

Hi,

If you're not comfortable, use method 2 in the link provided by Ramesh. This
is a safe procedure that should help you isolate it.

file compression/archifing tool) and InCD (a component of Nero CD-burning
SW)
all appear to be possible candidates. All three are relatively new to me
and
installed at about the same time. However, I think that the primary
candidate
is WinImp because it is NOT showing up in ShellExView but certainly exists
in
Context Menus (ergo the handler(s) must be somewhere). And after having
uninstalled WinImp the errant rt-click-become-toast behavior has not
recurred
(although not enough time/rt-click events have occurred for me to be
comfortable in RELYing on the problem as being resolved, Explorer has gone
much longer than usual w/o self-destructing).
I wouldn't think that Nero w/b the culprit as it is a too well-known,
established and cared-for appln, and therefore would expect more similar
episodes of what I've encountered be found on my web researches of this
problem.
Pretty much the same as in re: AVG, but I am going to hold off on using it
a
bit until I can more gradually integrate it into the environment.

I am quite comfortable editing the Registry, just don't know ALL there is
about it and was uncertain about those two particular entries.

However, since my reinstall and avoidance of the two prospective culprits,
Explorer has behaved itself w/o further incident. The degree of testing I've
put it thru allows me to be 99% convinced that these Context Handler entries
in the Registry were indeed the source of these troubles, so thanks to you,
Ramesh, and (at least one of) these two programs, I've learned a little more
about it!

Thank you both.

I have been troubleshooting this situation for weeks w/o any success. If
anyone HAS encountered this and knows an answer, pls post it!

Often, when rt-clicking an object or attempting to delete an active
object,
Explorer will just hang there for 5-7 seconds or so trying to open up
the
Context/Confirmation window (as is appropriate for what I
clicked/pressed),
but eventually fails with the Dr. Watson reporting tool. For the
longest
time
the details of the reporting process kept stating that MS did not know
why
the error occurred but urged me to upgrade to SP2. So finally I gave in
and
did so. But the problem persists.

I have also tried to accomplish my file management tasks using My
Computer
and Internet Explorer GUIs, but they also exhibit the same behavior.

This does not affect all objects (but does seem to affect all
object-TYPES).
And, surprisingly, an object previously affected will sometimes "right"
itself and later Explorer will work properly with it. Usually this will
be
noticed subsequent to some kind of adjustment (usually permissions
resetting,
or ownership change) to an object above it in the tree, but by no means
always. Sometimes I can change ownerships on a different volume and go
back
to a previosuly errant object and it will then behave properly, on
occasion...8o() but no consistency has been identified.

This situation is known to NOT be correctable by any kind of reboot.

Sometimes I can move an affeceted object to another location, and then
succesfully perform the Rt-click or deletion process, and then again
sometimes not. In those NOT occasions I have tried moving the parent
folder,
and then sometimes _that_ will succeed, others not.

I have Scandisk/CHKDSK/NortonDiskDoctor/Spinrite 'd all disks so many
times
I am certain by now that each one of these programs is on a
first-name-basis
with each and every byte on my disks, but no errors are being detected
or,
sadly, repaired (if they even exist, which I do not believe the
troubles
are
in the files, disks or directories, but within Explorer or a
sub-component...)

If anyone can tell me how I can "reinstall/restore" Explorer.exe (with
all
of its sub-parts, which I don't know), please post that!

What I am also interested in some assistance with is how or
where-can-I-go
to get documentation on what Windows components (like .dll's, etc.) are
ingredients of Explorer.exe, IExplore.exe and
whatever-it-is-that-drives-MyComputer.exe (although I suspect that it
is
still Explorer.exe or the root prog Explore.exe).
My present idea is to research these subcomponents and find what common
pieces there are among/between them and see if any patch/upgrade/other
SW
install has inadvertantly stepped on them which is causing this
behavior
in
Explorer.

Any MS-MVP's that can help me with finding this documentation out
there?
I've tried TechNet searching for several hours the last two days to no
avail... I could sure use some assistance in wihich direction to head.

Thanks!

My observations are that AVG7 (AVG Free anti-virus by Grisoft), WinImp
(a
file compression/archifing tool) and InCD (a component of Nero
CD-burning
SW)
all appear to be possible candidates. All three are relatively new to
me
and
installed at about the same time. However, I think that the primary
candidate
is WinImp because it is NOT showing up in ShellExView but certainly
exists
in
Context Menus (ergo the handler(s) must be somewhere). And after having
uninstalled WinImp the errant rt-click-become-toast behavior has not
recurred
(although not enough time/rt-click events have occurred for me to be
comfortable in RELYing on the problem as being resolved, Explorer has
gone
much longer than usual w/o self-destructing).
I wouldn't think that Nero w/b the culprit as it is a too well-known,
established and cared-for appln, and therefore would expect more
similar
episodes of what I've encountered be found on my web researches of this
problem.
Pretty much the same as in re: AVG, but I am going to hold off on using
it

bit until I can more gradually integrate it into the environment.

Thanks not only for the article, but for showing me a *valuable*

Ramesh, Microsoft MVP
Windows XP Shell/User
http://windowsxp.mvps.org

I have been troubleshooting this situation for weeks w/o any success.
If
anyone HAS encountered this and knows an answer, pls post it!

Often, when rt-clicking an object or attempting to delete an active
object,
Explorer will just hang there for 5-7 seconds or so trying to open
up
the
Context/Confirmation window (as is appropriate for what I
clicked/pressed),
but eventually fails with the Dr. Watson reporting tool. For the
longest
time
the details of the reporting process kept stating that MS did not
know
why
the error occurred but urged me to upgrade to SP2. So finally I gave
in
and
did so. But the problem persists.

I have also tried to accomplish my file management tasks using My
Computer
and Internet Explorer GUIs, but they also exhibit the same behavior.

This does not affect all objects (but does seem to affect all
object-TYPES).
And, surprisingly, an object previously affected will sometimes
"right"
itself and later Explorer will work properly with it. Usually this
will
be
noticed subsequent to some kind of adjustment (usually permissions
resetting,
or ownership change) to an object above it in the tree, but by no
means
always. Sometimes I can change ownerships on a different volume and
go
back
to a previosuly errant object and it will then behave properly, on
occasion...8o() but no consistency has been identified.

This situation is known to NOT be correctable by any kind of reboot.

Sometimes I can move an affeceted object to another location, and
then
succesfully perform the Rt-click or deletion process, and then again
sometimes not. In those NOT occasions I have tried moving the parent
folder,
and then sometimes _that_ will succeed, others not.

I have Scandisk/CHKDSK/NortonDiskDoctor/Spinrite 'd all disks so
many
times
I am certain by now that each one of these programs is on a
first-name-basis
with each and every byte on my disks, but no errors are being
detected
or,
sadly, repaired (if they even exist, which I do not believe the
troubles
are
in the files, disks or directories, but within Explorer or a
sub-component...)

If anyone can tell me how I can "reinstall/restore" Explorer.exe
(with
all
of its sub-parts, which I don't know), please post that!

What I am also interested in some assistance with is how or
where-can-I-go
to get documentation on what Windows components (like .dll's, etc.)
are
ingredients of Explorer.exe, IExplore.exe and
whatever-it-is-that-drives-MyComputer.exe (although I suspect that
it
is
still Explorer.exe or the root prog Explore.exe).
My present idea is to research these subcomponents and find what
common
pieces there are among/between them and see if any
patch/upgrade/other
SW
install has inadvertantly stepped on them which is causing this
behavior
in
Explorer.

Any MS-MVP's that can help me with finding this documentation out
there?
I've tried TechNet searching for several hours the last two days to
no
avail... I could sure use some assistance in wihich direction to
head.

Thanks!

This is just a followup post for anyone who may have had
similar symptoms, and reads this far.

After over a month now, my rt-click-to-toasted-explorer
issue has vanished since my removal of WinImp.
That has "cured" my issues.
FYI, WinImp is a Freeware archival-compression tool that, of
and by itself is a pretty neat little tool, but had some
rather crippling side-effects for me. Use caution if you
want to try it on your system!

Both Rick and Ramesh were correct in their directing me to
the Context Handler portion of the Registry as it clued me in
to what my particular problems were.

Thanks again guys!

My observations are that AVG7 (AVG Free anti-virus by Grisoft),
WinImp
(a
file compression/archifing tool) and InCD (a component of Nero
CD-burning
SW)
all appear to be possible candidates. All three are relatively new
to
me
and
installed at about the same time. However, I think that the primary
candidate
is WinImp because it is NOT showing up in ShellExView but certainly
exists
in
Context Menus (ergo the handler(s) must be somewhere). And after
having
uninstalled WinImp the errant rt-click-become-toast behavior has not
recurred
(although not enough time/rt-click events have occurred for me to be
comfortable in RELYing on the problem as being resolved, Explorer
has
gone
much longer than usual w/o self-destructing).
I wouldn't think that Nero w/b the culprit as it is a too
well-known,
established and cared-for appln, and therefore would expect more
similar
episodes of what I've encountered be found on my web researches of
this
problem.
Pretty much the same as in re: AVG, but I am going to hold off on
using
it
a
bit until I can more gradually integrate it into the environment.
Your comments?

Ramesh!
Thanks not only for the article, but for showing me a *valuable*
new(-to-me)
resource for researching XP woes. Most GRATEFULLY Appreciative!!!

I'm off now to re-install XP (for the above and a few other reasons)
and
will be much more sensitive to newly added programs. Will post a
followup
when I get back up.

Cheers!

Danor,

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu
handlers:

Ramesh, Microsoft MVP

I have been troubleshooting this situation for weeks w/o any
success.
If
anyone HAS encountered this and knows an answer, pls post it!

Often, when rt-clicking an object or attempting to delete an
active
object,
Explorer will just hang there for 5-7 seconds or so trying to
open
up
the
Context/Confirmation window (as is appropriate for what I
clicked/pressed),
but eventually fails with the Dr. Watson reporting tool. For the
longest
time
the details of the reporting process kept stating that MS did not
know
why
the error occurred but urged me to upgrade to SP2. So finally I
gave
in
and
did so. But the problem persists.

I have also tried to accomplish my file management tasks using My
Computer
and Internet Explorer GUIs, but they also exhibit the same
behavior.

This does not affect all objects (but does seem to affect all
object-TYPES).
And, surprisingly, an object previously affected will sometimes
"right"
itself and later Explorer will work properly with it. Usually
this
will
be
noticed subsequent to some kind of adjustment (usually
permissions
resetting,
or ownership change) to an object above it in the tree, but by no
means
always. Sometimes I can change ownerships on a different volume
and
go
back
to a previosuly errant object and it will then behave properly,
on
occasion...8o() but no consistency has been identified.

This situation is known to NOT be correctable by any kind of
reboot.

Sometimes I can move an affeceted object to another location, and
then
succesfully perform the Rt-click or deletion process, and then
again
sometimes not. In those NOT occasions I have tried moving the
parent
folder,
and then sometimes _that_ will succeed, others not.

What I am also interested in some assistance with is how or
where-can-I-go
to get documentation on what Windows components (like .dll's,
etc.)
are
ingredients of Explorer.exe, IExplore.exe and
whatever-it-is-that-drives-MyComputer.exe (although I suspect
that
it
is
still Explorer.exe or the root prog Explore.exe).
My present idea is to research these subcomponents and find what
common
pieces there are among/between them and see if any
patch/upgrade/other
SW
install has inadvertantly stepped on them which is causing this
behavior
in
Explorer.

Any MS-MVP's that can help me with finding this documentation out
there?
I've tried TechNet searching for several hours the last two days
to
no
avail... I could sure use some assistance in wihich direction to
head.

Thanks!
