Explorer and other stuff not responding

Using Windows 98. Explorer 6.1 with current updates.

For the last year, I have been getting many errors while on the internet.
Now Explorer is starting to stop reponding on the desktop and reverts to
safemode. "Explorer not responding Kernall32.dll". "MSN not responding
Kernall32.dll " , misc other errors sometiems with the kernal 32 error.
Sometimes the only way to get the system to function again is by a hard
reboot.

(MSN 8 with an accelorator used to have very few problems. MSN 9 with no
accelorationa appears to work, but very slow. If I use Explorer instead of
MSN software, things work 2-3X faster. As soon as the accelorator is
installed, MSN starts acting up, Explorer does to, but not as quickly. I'm
trying another ISP PeoplePC) and it works a lot better, but still have
occasional errors. Things appeared to worsen last year after I tried AOL.
They had to load a program to make it work for me and also had to rebuild
whatever the program is that finds web site by the name instead of the
number. I've since deleted AOL.

I have used 2 different spyware programs (both in safe mode and regular
mode), virus check, deleted cookies and temp file, checked the drive for
errors, defragmented, uninstalled and reinstalled MSN, and deleted a game
that may have been causing problems. All with no luck

Hi ScttLee :)

AOL installs a lot of junk on your system and a good deal of it is left
behind when you "Uninstall" it, and much of it is not the kind of stuff you
want on your machine. I would venture to say that there is still a lot of
the residule AOL stuff on your system and it could be causing part of your
problem. Another contributor could be spyware, often another shirt-tail of
AOL, but, could have come from another source.

First, follow all the steps here and make sure your machine is clean of any
scumware:

to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of any
necessary steps to clean your system.

Please post a link to the forum where you post your HJT log back to this
thread so that we can follow your progress there.

While you are waiting for the HiJackThis log to be analyzed, go to
Start>Search> and type in aol and hit enter or Search button.

You will likely see a variety of aol related files in various folders on
your system. However, some may be so integrated with your operating system
that deleting them could cause even more problems. Make a copy of the list
in the Search window and paste it into Notepad or Wordpad and save it to a
place on your hard drive where you know where to find it. Then copy the
files and make a new post on the AumHa forum under the IE/OE section there,
not your HJT post. Post the list there explaining that you have uninstalled
the AOL, but, these are the remaining files, and can they be deleted. The
folks there will tell you which ones can safely be deleted.

Hope this helps :)
