When I right click on "My Computer" or any other folder, "Explore" and not
"Open" is the top most item in the menu. So everytime I click on "My
Computer" or a folder, Windows Explorer shows the "Folders" view on the left
hand side instead of "System Tasks" on the top, then "Other Places" and
"Details" on the bottom that a Windows XP user would normally get when left
clicking on "My Computer". I can easily get Windows XP to perform the
"Open" function instead of "Explore" by right clicking on "My Computer" and
then clicking on "Open", but I am so used to Windows automatically
performing the "Open" function when clicking on "My Computer" or a folder.
Does anyone know of any registry settings that I can change to make this
normal or a script that will do it for me? I have experience with computer
troubleshooting and repair so I am well aware of the dangers of modifying
the registry. Is there any other simpler fix?

In Windows Explorer click Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Highlight Folder (not File Folder). It's near the top.
Click Advanced.
Click open.
Click Set Default.
