Hi everyone!

I have some questions about a configuration our friend Paul suggested:
the ASUS P5P800-VM Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 865G
http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1079&l1=3&l2=11&l3=0

and the Intel Pentium D 805
http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/details.asp?sSpec=SL8ZH&Find=True&OrdCode=BX80551PE2666FN
I have here some characteristics:

For the Asus mainboard:

- LGA775 socket for Intel® 65nm Pentium D/Pentium 4/Celeron CPU
- Intel 865G + Intel ICH5
- 800/ 533 MHz
- Dual-channel DDR400
- Intel® Extreme Graphics 2
- 1 x AGP 8X
- 2 *ATA133 ,2 x SATA
- 10/100 LAN
- 6-Channel audio

For the intel processor:
Results

- Processor Frequency 2.66 GHz CPUID
- Package Type 775 pin
- Bus Speed 533 MHz
- Thermal Guideline 95.0W
- Core Stepping
- L2 Cache Size 2 MB
- L2 Cache Speed 2.66 GHz

Anybody had experience with this configuration or part of it???
I want to add memory I was thinking in Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin
DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model KVR400/512R
($38.99)

would they work together???

I found also a HDD Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L080P0 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra
ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM ($49.99)

any suggestion about this configuration??? would it work fine for an
student (I'm think it should last for at least 3 years)

Any experience with http://www.chiefvalue.com???

Any suggestion about this base-configuration???

What is overclocking and how it work??? I recently read about it, but I
need more information please...

Thank you,

Peter

Why are you looking for an AGP motherboard? Unless you have a darn good AGP
video card, I wouldn't bother. Even if you do, I don't think I'd bother. :)
There isn't much life left in the AGP boards, IMHO.

If you check the CPU compatibility list at support.asus.com, you'll find
that the P5P800-VM supports the Pentium D 805 from BIOS version 0109 on.

I have no personal experience with this combination.

You may find this interesting:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores/

It's a bit misleading, though: they had to go to water cooling to go above
3.8 GHz. Heck, they could have probably gone higher if they had resorted to
phase change cooling (refrigerants).

If you're building an entirely new system, you may not wish to use a board
with an old 865G chipset. DDR2 used to be a lot more expensive than DDR RAM,
but I think that is less true now. An AGP graphics slot also limits the
variety of choices (if you don't use the onboard graphics). I'd also suggest
a SATA hard drive over an ATA one, although the performance differences may
not be large.

As regards the memory, you get the best performance with a pair of DIMMs to
support dual channel mode. The difference may not be life-altering if you're
not running applications that require massive RAM access (e. g. Photoshop
with large images), but dual channel is pretty much standard at the moment
(in my opinion).

I'm not familiar with http://www.chiefvalue.com. I have done business mainly
with www.newegg.com. Their motherboard selector:

http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/RangeSearch.asp?N=2000200280&Subcategory=280

may be instructive for you even if you don't buy from them.

It's looking like the forthcoming Core 2 Duo (code named Conroe) CPUs will
be the desirable ones, when they become available in late July. They may
even take some market share back from AMD at the high end. Maybe you'd care
to do some more reading.
